John Blecha is Drowned- Young Man Drowned Thursday Before Rescuers Could Reach Him.
One of the saddest deaths which ever occured in this vicinity was that of John Blecha,Jr., the oldest child and only son of Mr. & Mrs. John Blecha residing two miles north of DuBois.
On Thursday morning, June 7th, John, in company with his father and several other men, started for the Nemaha river to put in a day fishing. As the river was quite high they were fishing in a low place where the water had overflowed and was about seven feet deep. It was in this place that John met his premature death. He and some of the party had gone wading and had gotten into deeper water when he was taken with cramps and though several of the men hurried to his rescue when his cries for help were heard it was impossible to save him.
Phone calls were sent to town and several carloads responded immediately and the search for his body was made. After a short while Rufus Huff and Cecil Sebring succeeded in bringing the body to the top and the body was immediately taken to the home of Mr. & Mrs. Pesek to which place Dr. Martin was summoned, but all in vain, all hopes of life were gone.
After the undertaker had prepared the body it was taken to his home the same evening.
John F. Blecha at the time of his death was 14 years, 8 months and 24 days of age; he was a member of the Young Peoples' Bohemian Club (Nas Budounost) "Our Future" No. 12 R.C.B.J.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 1:00, conducted by Rev. McKelvey and F.G. Dobrovolny. All members of the club were present to pay their last tribute to their lost brother.
The girl members were all dressed in white, their hair and dresses decorated with white carnations and black and white ribbons. The young men also wore the same emblem and flower. Music was furnished by the Humboldt band. The pall bearers consisted of six young men, members of the club.
After the services were over at the house the procession which consisted entirely of automobils started for the Bohemian National cemetery. The band and all members of the club, walking, led the long procession.
When all had reached the cemetery the club members again formed an aisle through which passed the automobile hearse and the relatives. After the services were over at the cemetery the club members passed by his grave and dropped upon the coffin the flower with which they were decorated. He was laid to rest in a beautiful bed of floral offering. To the bereaved parents, sisters and all of relatives and friends who are left to mourn his death we extend our most heartfelt sympathy.
In nature we find these three important elements-air, fire and water.
The element last named was the cause of our brother's death.
But again nature granted him the most beautiful spring day.
On his last journey to everlasting rest.-Contributed.
