Joseph Nickell Revolutionary War Veteran Overview

    Joseph Nickell

    (1750-1829)

Joseph Nickell was my 5th Great Grandfather.  He was born in Virginia, but ultimately settled in Morgan County, Kentucky.  He and his brothers were veterans of the Revolutionary War.  They served under Captain James Henderson’s Company of the Virginia Militia from Greenbrier.

Included in this album for Joseph Nickell are copies of the records that helped to document his service to his country.  They come from the book A History of Monroe County, West Virginia and from an approved application to the Sons of the American Revolution.  In addition, I’ve included two histories about Joseph Nickell that were copied from websites on the Internet.  Finally, I’ve included two historical descriptions of the campaign that Joseph Nickell and his brothers fought in.  They actually fought in the first battle of the Revolutionary War.

Some historians quote a different battle as being the first engagement against actual British troops.  However, this first battle at Point Pleasant was against Native Americans.  As facts later emerged,  the Indian tribes were organized and encouraged by the British Governor of Virginia to quell the beginnings of the organized rebellious militia.
