    • Name George Cornelius MCDANIEL  [2
      • If he came from Scotland, the name may have been "MacDonald".
Born 1761/1770  Scottland Find all individuals with events at this location  [3, 4
      • Birth:

His son, George, states in the 1880 census that his father was born in Scotland:

      • The immigration date from the Index is 1772, but that is the date the Indenture was settled in court. That would probably imply that he arrived in late 1771 into the town of Pennsylvania on a ship that sailed from Rotterdam.

      Record of Indentures 1772 McDaniel
      Record of Indentures 1772 McDaniel
Page 48 & 49 contain information on the Indenture Service of a George McDaniel. I don't know at this time that this our George C. McDaniel, but assuming the length of indenture coincides with what would be his 21st birthday, then that would place his birthdate as April 20, 1763. This date would be consistent with census calculations.

Corneilus acquires land in Logan County from Robert Hargraves
      • In this land acquisition, it appears that Robert Hargraves is selling a piece of land that came into his possession through the dower that his wife brought to their marriage. In the same court order that conveys the land to Cornelius, it also state that Nancy Hargraves is approving giving up her dower.

        "Mary Hargraves relinquishes her dower".

I learned on Ancestry.com that Robert Hargraves married Nancy Freen on 1 Dec 1794 in Logan County, KY.

According to the 1810 Census, Cornelius and Family are living in Logan County, Kentucky
      • 1810 United States Federal Census 1810 United States Federal Census
        Name: Cornelius McDaniel
        County: Logan
        State: Kentucky

        2 male under 10 years old [John + ?], 2 males 10-15 [William & James?], 1 male 26-44 [George], 1 male over 45 [Cornelius], 1 female under 10 [?], 1 female 10-15 [Eleanor?], 1 female 16-25 [Jane?], 1 female 26-44 [Patsy].

[Another possibility is that Cornelius' father lived with them; and/or possibly both his parents, however, I think they would probably have been shown as head of households. This would account for the extra son and would put Cornelius and Patsy in the same age bracket: 26-44] Also, Since George was born about 1795, he should be in the 10-15 group, not the 26-44. Therefore, the other option that I suspect is:

        2 males under 10 years old (John & James), 2 males 10-15 (William & George), 1 male 26-44 (Cornelius), 1 male over 45 (father, father-in-law or older brother), 1 female under 10 [?], 1 female 10-15 [Eleanor], 1 female 16-25 [Jane], 1 female 26-44 [Patsy].

      Notes
      • I have assumed that Cornelius McDaniel only had one wife, because I have not found a second marriage record to contradict that theory. However, his marriage record in Kentucky states that he is marrying Patsy Dickey. In his will, he leaves items to his "...beloved wife, Martha...".

In addition, when Cornelius sells his land in Alabama in 1834, Martha is also listed as a seller.

So, at this time, I am showing his wife as Martha "Patsy" Dickey.

      • MIGRATION TOWARDS ALABAMA & TENNESSEE:

Thier daughter, Jane, married William Rame on June, 11, 1812 in Sumner County, in northern Tennesee. This county is just below Logan County, KY where the family was in 1810.

By 1816, his son George gets married in Rutherford County TN, so the family has migrated south from KY.
Very soon, they end up in Madison County, Alabama (at the time Missippi Territory).

Also: According to the 1816 Census of Heads of Families in Madison County, Alabama, Cornelius had not made it to Alabama yet.

        ALABAMA:

We know for sure that their daughter, Elenor, gets married in Madison County, Al on Sept. 14, 1820 to Arthur McCrary.

1820: It appears that Alabama did not take part in the 1820 Federal Census, and I can find no information for Alabama's State Census for Madison County in 1820.

      • Immigration:

I am still trying to determine when George Cornelius McDaniel came to this country. I have identified a few potential answers:

Option A: I think there is a lot of merit for this option.

Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s
        Name: George McDaniel
        Year: 1772
        Place: Pennsylvania
        Source Publication Code: 7207
        Primary Immigrant: McDaniel, George
Annotation: Original volume, from which this was taken, is among the holdings of the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia. Much information on persons indentured. Printed in part in nos. 7222-7223.

Source Bibliography: "RECORD OF INDENTURES OF INDIVIDUALS BOUND OUT as Apprentices, Servants, Etc. and of German and Other Redemptioners in the Office of the Mayor of the City of Philadelphia, October 3, 1771, to October 5, 1773." In The Pennsylvania-German Society Proceedings and Addresses, vol. 16 (1905), Lancaster, PA: 1907. 325p. Reprinted with added index by Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1973. 364p.
        Page: 48-49

Source Citation: Place: Pennsylvania; Year: 1772; Page Number: 48-49

Along with Option A, The Record of Indentures from Oct. 3, 1771-Oct. 5, 1773 for Philadelphia shows a George McDaniel being immigrated into the country as an apprentice. His term is for 12 years, 3 months and 18 days. [See documentation] This means that his indenture period would have ended April 20, 1784. I don't know the significance of that date, but perhaps it was something like his 21st birthday. If that had been the case, his birth year would be about 1763, which is consistent with census estimates of his birth year.

What I would still have to reconcile with this alternative is how it came to be that he was on a ship from Rotterdam, Netherlands. He may have ferried from the east coast of Scotland down to Rotterdam, and then to America.

        Option B1: MAYBE??

Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s
        Name: Cornelius MacDonald
        Year: 1771
        Place: Maryland
        Source Publication Code: 1243
        Primary Immigrant: MacDonald, Cornelius
Annotation: Date and place of mention in land survey. County and name of land purchased are provided. Original records are contained in Land Office Registers, indexed starting on page vii of the introduction.
Source Bibliography: COLDHAM, PETER WILSON. Settlers Of Maryland 1679 - 1783. Consolidated Edition. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 2002.
        Page: 429

Source Citation: Place: Maryland; Year: 1771; Page Number: 429.

        Source Information:

Gale Research. Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2006. Original data: Filby, P. William, ed.. Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s. Farmington Hills, MI, USA: Gale Research, 2006.

        Option B2. Maybe??

Perhaps, George Cornelius was a son to this Cornelius McDaniel who lived in Maryland.

If this is true, then see above where I have documented where that Cornelius MacDonald purchased land in 1771 and 1772 in Maryland. "Maryland Cornelius MacDonald"

        Option C:

I have found several records for a Cornelius McDaniel (MacDonald) serving in the Revolutionary War for both New Jersey and New York from 1778-1782. George Cornelius McDaniel may be a son of this individual.

Furthermore, I have found a marriage record in 1746 in Philadelphia, PA for a Cornelius McDaniel. Again, this may be the Cornelius McDaniel who serves in the Revolutionary War and my own George Cornelius McDaniel my be a child of this person.
