Oakley Family History by Maude Perry (2)
This is a letter written by Maude Perry in which she describes her understanding of the Oakley Family History. There are some slight mistakes in this letter, but it is a nice document to show earlier research. This letter was shared with my by Laura Mulford in Nov. 2104.

    • Notes
      • From a document prepared by Wm. Lynn Nickell of Morgan County:

"John S. Oakley, born 1788, came to Floyd County from Montgomery County (later Bath) in 1809. He married Margaret (Peggy) Lewis on February 23, 1810. Margaret was born Dec. 12, 1791 daughter of Thomas and Hannah Hopkins Lewis. John S. Oakley was in the 1810 census of Floyd County. He was a member of the first Morgan County court which met March 10, 1823. Later he was a state representative from Morgan County. Died between 1840-1850. He was a son of William Oakley, born 1768 in Virginia. His mother was from Bath County. William Oakley was a son of Benjamin Oakley who left Virginia for Lincoln County, Kentucky in 1784 and died in 1801 in Montgomery County."

According to Don Sandrock's email (June 10, 2008) Isaac Wilson Nickell and John Oakley are both buried on the farm in an overgrown section of woods. There are no headstones for them just ground marking stones. Mary Ann (Oakley-Nickell-Sexton) and Margaret Lewis are also there. There is just one headstone indicating a cemetery. It is for a Cox, he beleives.

See "Oakley-stone.jpg" in Nickell photo data file.

Also from Don Sandrock (June 17, 2008):

I did a search for "John Oakley"+"Morgan county"+Keziah, and several of these hits list her maiden name as Butler.
Also, in the Oakley forum on Geneology.com the name Butler is said to be her maiden name.
I have seen it spelled three ways, Keziah, Kasiah, & Kesiah.

John S. Oakley is listed in the 1825 will of his father, William Oakley. He is described as the only son of William.

        1820 Census:
