Abt 1814 - Aft 1886 (~ 73 years)
-
Name |
John J RAINES [3] |
- At one point, I added this name of "Thomas" as one of the sons, because in the 1830 census, the name just under George McDaniel in Rutherford County is Thomas Rame. However, I’m thinking that if there is a Thomas Rame in Rutherford County in Tennessee by George McDaniel, it’s probably the brother to William. It makes more sense that all of Jane’s sons went with her to Alabama where she is listed in the 1830 census with 3 sons.

Notes |
- I had to piece together information and evidence to determine the actual names of the four children from this marriage. In the early census data, they were only listed as males and a female with the age bracket that they were in.
Therefore, I have made some BIG assumptions in assigning names to Jane’s 4 children. I am including a description of the reasoning behind each name. If more accurate data becomes available or if other evidence is found that can refute my assumptions, I will gladly make modifications.
Because Jane and William Rame are still in Kentucky in the 1820 census, that means that some, if not all of their kids were born in Kentucky.
It is clear from the census data that Jane had 3 boys and one daughter with William Rame. However, in the 1830 census, there are 3 boys living with Jane and William Rame, so the Thomas Rame near George McDaniel May have been a brother to William, it also means that Jane May have had 4 sons.
There is no evidence that she had any children with William Combs.
Thomas: At first, I added this name of "Thomas" as one of the sons, because in the 1830 census, the name just under George McDaniel in Rutherford County is Thomas Rame.
Cornelius: In the 1840 census, there is a Cornelius Rains listed right after William Combs. Furthermore, William Combs puts up the bond for the marriage of Cornelius Rains. Finally, Cornelius is the name of Jane’s father, so I fully believe that he is one of Jane’s sons. That means that his name evolved from Rame to Rains.
William McDaniel Rains: This William would be the only child still living with Jane in 1840 census. The other 3 children were married in the 1830's. By virtue that his middle name is McDaniel, I believe this to be the main connection to Jane's family. He would have been named for his father, William, and in the 1850 census, it shows that he was born in Kentucky.
John J. Rains: The documentation for this person is slightly weaker, but itis still worth considering. In the same 1840 census that shows Thomas McDaniel, George McDaniel and William Combs an Cornelius Rains, John J Rains is two lines above Thomas McDaniel. That might imply a connection. In addition, another researcher has reported that John J Rains’ wife is Mary Neely, daughter of James Neely. That is the same James Neely that I have shown as the father to Isabella Neely, wife of George McDaniel.
Margaret: Once I learned that Cornelius married Martha Ann Fields in April of 1838, I found another marriage record for a Margaret Ramsey to a James W. Fields in June of 1838. I believe that Ramsey was a misspelling or evolved spelling of Rames and that James was a brother to Martha Ann. There was only one Field Family living in Hardeman in the 1830 census. That belonged to a John Field. John dies in 1855 and is buried in the Old Cannon Cemetery, where the other McDaniel and Combs family members are buried.
I strongly believe these links are strong enough to presume that William, John J and Cornelius are the 3 sons of Jane McDaniel and William Rame and that Margaret was the daughter.
