    • Notes
      • Lived in the Old Cox's Mill, three miles below Hazel Green, KY. according to Mrs. W. E. Bach

From "The Licking Valley Courier" 'Sesquicentennial Supplement', Oct. 12, 1972, West Liberty, KY.: (Page 18) "Early History The first mill erected within the limits of the county was built by John Cox, on Blackwater creek, in 1810, and was driven by horse power. The stones were twenty inches in diameter and five inches thick, and were brought from Cumberland Gap upon a pack horse. The second was a water mill built by Edmund Wells, 1816, on Liking river, opposite West Liberty. Prior to the establishment of these mills, the meal used by the people who then inhabited the county, was made with mortar and pestle. The first license to conduct a public tavern in Morgan County was granted to Edmund Wells, April 14, 1823, and the second one to Wm. Trimble, at Hazel Green, in 1825."

On Ancestry.Com, they have the Book: Early and modern history of Wolfe County [database on-line]. Provo, UT: The Generations Network, Inc., 2005.
Original data: Early and modern history of Wolfe County. Campton, Ky.: The Club, 1958.

This book has a page dedicated to John Cox and family (P. 93)

"John Cox, born in 1785, with his wife, Judith Sexton, of French Ancestry, came from Virginia, to Eastern Kentucky, about 1800. He is the first one to onw a water mill in Morgan County, (now Wolfe), and has been known since as "The Cox's Mill" settlement. The had the following children:
James Cox, who married Anna Hanks.
William Cox, who married Cynthia Reid.
Cynthia Cox, who married Emmanuel Price Lewis.
Darinda Cox, who married James Stamper
Dr. Benjamin Cox, who married 1st Zarilda Allington and 2nd Malinda McCormick.
Elizabeth Cox, who married Thomas Pieratt.
Ann Cox, who married Arch Day.

So this would make the descendants of the Hanks, Reid, Lewis, Stamper, Allington (Ellington) and Pieratts and Days related to this Cox Family.

John Cox was buried on his Trundle Bed, as per his request, and my mother (Zarilda Wills Day) remembered being at his funeral and remembering his asleep in his bed. He and his wife, Judith Sexton Cox are both buried at the "Cox's Mill Graveyard" three miles below Hazel Green. His grave is covered with a large stone as they used to do. She is buried by his side."

Also from the same book, p. 94: "John Cox- the first to come to Kentucky, was given two Slaves by his father, before leaving Virginia. Their names were London and Barney Cox. I have heard my mother (Zarilda Wills Day) tell of knowing both of them and how they helped at her great grandfather's mill which was "The Cox's Mill". During the War Between the States-she was left at Home as the oldest child as her father, Jordan Wills, served in the Confederate Army with General John Hunt Morgan, and she being the oldest child was often sent to mill to get her corn ground into meal. She would always be helped on and off her horse by one of these Slaves. I have a copy of a wonderful will which "London Cox" made before his death."

      • From Find-a-Grave.com

        Birth: Mar. 8, 1784
        Bedford County
        Virginia, USA
        Death: Feb., 1863
        Hazel Green
        Wolfe County
        Kentucky, USA

John and his wife Judith came to Kentucky around 1800, and settled in part of Floyd County which later became Morgan County.

John, along with two of his brothers, Solomon and James R Cox, built and ran the first water mill in Morgan County, which was called Cox's Mill. The mill was located on Blackwater Creek and the grinding stones are believe to have been brought up from the Cumberland gap by pack horse.

John and Judith spent the remainder of their lives living near Hazel Green, Wolfe County, Kentucky.

        A Remarkable Family

The survivors of the Cox family, who were raised in the neighborhood of what is now known as Cox's Mill, in this county, are all men and women of fine health, robust frame and remarkable longevity. The following is a list of their names and ages: Wm. Cox, this county, 81; Cynthia Lewis, wife of Price Lewis of Menifee, 77; James Cox, this county, 74; Darinda Stamper, mother of J. T. and L. G. Stamper, this county, 71; Dr. B. F. Cox, of Mt. Sterling, 68; Anna Day, wife of Arch Day of Morgan, and mother of Judge Day, of Maytown, 61; Elizabeth Pieratt, of Morgan, 64. Total age, 496 years; average age, up to the time of census was taken, some 10 days since, 70 years, 10 months, 8 days, 13 hours, 42 minutes, 51 seconds. Our information is based upon data taken by one interested, and is, therefore, correct. The average weight of the seven is 200 pounds. We doubt if there is another family in the State, seven in number, as old, who are as active, and who carry their age so well. The Cox family is proverbial for its hospitality, and the writer happens to know it is with just cause, as he is indebted to Dr. B. F. Cox, of Mt. Sterling, for many kindnesses.
