    • Notes
      • !NOTES: His middle name came from the baptisim record of his son George. On Cecilia's baptisim record his middle name is spelled Erasimi.

!IMMIGRATION: Source was Czech Immigration Passenger Lists, author a Leo Baca, 1983, revised in 2000. Vol. 1, page 92 relates that between the years of 1848 to 1879 some 4,400 Czechs immigrated though the port of New Orleans and headed for Missouri, Illinois, Ohio, Arkansas, Nebraska, Kentucky, Wisconsin and Texas. Information in this book was found at the National Archives. Page 94 has the vessel Bessel arriving at the Port of New Orleans on 12 Jan 1858, with 12 Czech immigrants on board. Page 98 has the following listing. Blecha, Franz 46, Josepha 37, Johann 18, Franz 16, Maria 6, Josepha 10, Thomas 8, Anna 2, Skortiz; Bessel, 12 January 1858; St. Louis. Reference was found for the Bessel, Type:, steamship. Built:, 1854 by Caird & Co., Greenock, Scotland for the Cunard Line. No known photo or information available. This listing for the steam ship had a link to the family name RIEPE, which said a Mary came to America at age 38 years on the "Ship Bessel" with her husband and children. The ship bearing the RIEPE family departed from Bremen, Germany and arrived in St. Louis, MO on December 7, 1858. The Blecha's arrived some eleven months earlier in the year on January 12, 1858, in St. Louis on the same ship. If you look at the map of Germany, the inland Port of Bremen is some 42 miles by river from the North Sea at the Port of Bremenhaven giving a direct link to the North Atlantic Ocean via the North Sea. Bremen to Skortiz is some 320 airmiles, quite a distant to travel by road in 1858. Question, was the Steamship Bessel employed in a series of round trips from Bremen to St. Louis? If so, checking of the records of departures from Bremen would be in order. The missing Thomas is listed with the family on this record. Most of the ages given on the record are within one or two years of what is already recorded, and the difference would depend on how you round off the ages. One slight difference is with Josephine, who is listed as ten years old when prior records would have her about seven years old when on the ship. Another difference is with Maria [Mary] who would of been 12 years of age, not 6 as listed on the ship's record.

!SOURCE: Carmella Blecha, 1984, copy of her family register. Also from the History of Washington & Ozaukee Counites, WI, Illustrated 1881, Town of Farmington. FRANK E. BLECHA, Postmaster & junior member of the firm of Braatz & Co., general merchants, cheese manfacturers and hotel proprietors; was born in Bohemia Sept 13 1841; came to America in 1858, and spent his first year in Illinois and Missouri; he then came to Trenton; in 1864 he went to Chicago, and enlisted Oct. 4 of that year in Co. I 15th Ill. Vol. Inf.; as musician and served till the end of the war. He was married in Trenton, Oct. 29, 1866, by a Cath. Minister, to Miss Mary Huebing, daughter of Anton Huebing. This came from a family register provied by Carmella Blecha. Mrs. Blecha was born on the Atlantic Ocean; they have had six children-John A.; Clara died when six years of age; Frank N.; Anna M.; George; Cecelia and Arthur. About 1867, Mr. Blecha removed to Fillmore, Town of Farmington, and the following year entered into partnership with Mr. Henry Braatz, in his present businees; Aug. 3, 1870, he was appointed Postmaster of the Fillmore Office, which position he has held to this date; in politics, Mr. Blecha is a radical Republician. Another source has him as the builder of Athens House [Hotel] sometime before 1890.

!NOTES: Port Washington Court House, index card file "Declaration of Intent for Naturalization". Frank Blecha, place of Birth-Austria 1842, Port of Entry Jan. 1856-New Orleans, Date of Declaration - Nov. 7, 1867. 1920 Federal Census had him born in Austria.

Frank E. Blecha was tied to this Blecha family by way of a letter written by his son Arthur to his son Ralph Jordan Blecha, dated 6 July 1935. It read "My dad, Frank E. Blecha, sold his business at Fillmore and moved to Milwaukee, as we had relatives living there. We stayed in Milwaukee two years, owing to my dad's health we had to leave. The doctor had advised him to go north, having his sister, Mrs. Schmit, at Athens". Mrs. Schmit is Josephine Blecha, the sister of Jan Blecha and his brothers and sisters. See the letter in its entirity written by Arthur to his son Jordan. Also, in the obit of Josephine Blecha Schmitt, it is mentioned that F. N. Blecha, the son of Frank E. Blecha, and Miss Cella Blecha the daughter of Frank E. Blecha, along with the brother of Laura Londsdorf who married Arthur Blecha, William attended. See the obit of Josepine Blecha.

!MARRIED: Holy Trinity Church, Newburg, Washington, WI. These church records have Blecha spelled in different ways and may account for various spellings of Blecha that show up. The marriage record had Maria Hubing marrying Franciscum Blecher and spelled as Franciscus Blicher and mother as Josaphinae Bilick, which lst names will be found in other records and listing on other family history sites.

!DIED: June 19, 1892, Athens, Marathon, WI. From family register provided by Carmella Blecha.

!BURIED: Athens, Marathon, WI, cemetery. On the tall white tombstone is engraved, Co. K. 15. Ill/NFT, per Ruth Blecha in July 2001.
