Although inevitable, it is with regret that the Record is called to chronicle the passing of Mr. Peter Schmitt, one of Athens pioneers and most respected citizen, the final death word coming last Friday March 1. Had the deceased survived untill the sixth of May, he would of been 67 years of age. Mr. Schmitt was more or less disabled with rheumatism for many years but was always able to tend to his business until several months ago when he became severely ill and to this end died from a complication of different diseases.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday morning from St.Anthonys's church, services being conducted by Rev. Father Daniels and interment made in the Athens cemetery. The funeal was very largely attended and the floral offerings were many and beautiful.
Decased was born in Reihnprice, Germany, coming to Cleveland, Ohio with his parents when he was three years old. After living there for several years he moved on a farm in Washington County, Wisconsin. Here he grew up to manhood and was married to Miss Josephine Blecha on May 9, 1876.Four years later they came to Marathon county settling on a farm three miles east of Athens, on the town line.
There to their union five children were born, namely: Mary, Anna, Helen, Josephine and Frank.
After twelve years of fruitful toiling on the farm, he sold same and moved to Athens, where he helped to lay the corner stone for the first house in Athens, which is where the Athens electric light plant is now located.
He held the office of Village treasurer ever since the Village was incorporated and was Justice of the Peace sixteen years; in holding both of these offices at the time of his death. Was a member of the local Woodman Lodge and was clerk of same for fourteen years. As a further occupation he wrote insurance and sold plants, trees etc.
Deceased was always a good, honest and industrious man and was liked by everyone who knew him, which is certainly shown by the long period of years he held the above mentioned offices.
He leaves to mourn his death his wife and five children who are namely: Mrs. Anton Mickler of Waukesh, Wis, Mrs. C. Bell of Toledo, Ohio, Mrs Josephine Nuerenberg of St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. George Hubing of Athens, Frank Schmitt of Hartford, Wis.,and sixteen grandchildren.
