      • 1820 United States Federal Census 1820 United States Federal Census
        Name: Michael Carpenter
        Township: Owingsville
        County: Bath
        State: Kentucky

Source Citation: Year: 1820; Census Place: Owingsville, Bath, Kentucky; Roll: M33_16; Page: 190; Image: 101.

In the 1820 Kentucky census, it shows:

2 males (age 10-16), 2 males (age 18-26), 1 male (over 45 - probably Michael Sr.), 2 girls (age under 10), 2 girls (age 16-26), and one female over 45. The also appear to own 1 male slave (age 14-26), 1 female slave (age 14-26), and 2 female slaves (age 26-45).

[This would mean that 4 sons are still living at home, and that there are four daughters living with Michael now. I considered whether these could be daughters of his oldest sons living at home, but currently, I don't show any birth dates of his grandchildren that would be in the teens between 1810-1820, except for John, but he has moved out and shows up on his own in the 1820 census.]

Living a couple of houses from Michael in the 1820 census is Daniel Carpenter and family. I don't know if this is an older son or brother to Michael at this time.

There is also a Absalem Carpenter living in Bath County during the 1820 census. I believe this to be another son of Michael, but I have no proof just yet.

This story tells about how Michael was under attack from hostile Indians

    • Notes
      • Story from "An Illustrated History of Bath County, Kentucky" (Page 456-457) In the year 1788 Michael Carpenter, a Mr. Hamilton, and a man by the name of Ragan were at work on Salt Well branch making a "clearing". They had set their guns down at a tree several steps from where they were at work.

While thus engaged they were fired upon by some Indians who were concealed nearby, Hamilton being mortally wounded. As Carpenter and Ragan did not know the number of their foes they concluded that the better part of wisdom was to seek safety in flight, and as they ran by the point where Hamilton had fallen they heard him calling them to protect him from further harm.

Ragan concluded to stand by Hamilton, but Carpenter ran on to the fort. Ragan who had concealed himself behind a tree began to cast about in order to discover, if possible, the whereabouts of the Indians and the probable number. He discovered that there were three Indians in the group and one of them was evidently trying to steal up to where Hamilton was lying in order to scalp him.

Ragan raised his gun and waited for the savage to enter the clearing and as he did so Ragan fired on the savage, killing him. The Indian had two guns, both heavily charged. These Ragan took possession of and kept a sharp lookout lest the other two Indians should steal upon him.

Remaining in his place of concealment for some time and seeing no further sign of Indians, Regan placed his wounded comrade on his back and carried him and the two guns to a tree blown up by the roots, and hid the wounded man in the tree top while he went on to the station for assistance. In the company with several others Ragan returned to the place where he had left Hamilton and found him still alive. A part of the company carried the wounded man to the fort, while the remaining portion pursued the Indians, but failed to overtake them; however, Hamilton died."

Note: In the 1810 census, Michael Carpenter's family is living next to Volentine Pieratt's family.

        Also for the 1810 Census:

[Since Michael is approx. 45 yrs. old for the census, he accounts for the one male 45+; giving him 6 male children. His wife is probably the one female 26-44 (she must be 44) giving him one daughter. Cynthia was born in about 1802, so she must be the other female. That means that right now, I have only 5 sons listed, and there must have been at least one more. It is possible that there could be others not listed in the 1810 census. Don't rule out James Carpenter, also in Montgomery Cty. He could be a 7th male childe of Michael. James is listed as being in the 16-25 group (within the child-bearing years of Michael and Elizabeth), as is James' wife. They list only one female child <10. COULD THE MISSING MALE CHILD BE ABNER? SEE THE 1860 CENSUS: HE'S LISTED AS "Abt Carpenter born 1796. IN THE 1850 CENSUS, HE'S LISTED AS "ABNER". SEE NOTES BELOW:

Also, see the note below about Absalem in the 1820 census. Absalem may also be Abner.

In the 1830 Kentucky census, he is listed under the 60-70 year-old range. That would put birth between 1760-1770.

In that same census, his wife is also in the 60-70 year range.

They have one boy living at home (aged: 20-30) and one girl (aged: 20-30).
