      • The 1830 Census accounts for John, his wife Anna, 4 boys and 4 girls. Because this is before the birth of Delia, it appears that there is another girl unaccounted for. Perhaps this is young girl who died young. I can find no documentation for the name of this girl

      Ezel named by Eli Pieratt
      Ezel named by Eli Pieratt
This document was shared with me by J.T. Pieratt of Nicholasville, Kentucky

    • Notes
      • BIRTH: One source gives his POB as Virginia, but another gives it as Morgan
        CO, KY.

BURIAL: He is buried near his son Raney's grave.

According to the Pieratt Family History: "Ezel is a biblical name - Elie Pieratt was a devoted member of the Christian Church at Ezel, which was organized by his father-in-law, Rev. Joe Nickell. He was chief contributor of funds which built the church there, and it was he who gave the name of the village and church as Ezel from a passage of scripture found in the Bible where God asked his disciples to hide behind the stone ezel. Hence the name Ezel for the village and church." "Eli Pieratt owned some 1,200 acres of virgin timber and land. He gave each of his sons 200 acres and his two daughters 150 acres each."

From "The Pieratt Family of Ezel" by Raymond F. Davis Published in Sept. 30, 1999 in The Licking Valley Courier:
Eli Pieratt, who was John's oldest son, was born in 1816 in Bath County, lived for 84 years, and is buried in the Ezel Cemetery. He married Gilly Ann Nickell on March 11, 1838. She was born September 27, 1816, in Bath County also. She was the daughter of Rev. Joseph Nickell and his wife, Rachel Kash Nickell. Soon after they married, they moved to what is now Ezel and lived in a log cabin where the cemetery is located now. This area was a wilderness; there was only about one acre of cleared land at the time. Even though the village of Ezel was established before the Civil War, it really didn't receive its official name until 1871 from Eli Pieratt. It may have been called Mortonsvill, named for an early storekeeper, Morton Pieratt (Eli's son). Then Eli named it Ezel after a rock in the Bible, a refuge for David, which is found in Samuel 20:19. After it became Ezel, Eli Pieratt was named its first postmaster in 1875. It was incorporated as a town in 1882.

Eli was an influential man, a big land owner, good politician, as well as a political and religious leader. He and his father-in-law, Preacher Joe Nickell, built a Christian Church on the same knoll or hill where the Ezel Presbyterian Church now stands. They furnished most of the materials and did a big part of the labor building the chrch. "Preacher Joe" became its first minister. Preacher Joe was the first person to be buried in Ezel Cemetery, and has a thin slab monument about three feet high. (The first location of the cemetery was close to the church where the parsonage now stands. Because of an outbreak of cholera in the 1870's, which they thought was caused the cemetery's location, they moved all the bodies to the present area shortly before Preacher Joe's death.)

Eli Pieratt owned all of the land in the Ezel vicinity. He was one of the very earliest settlers in that area. At one time, he must have owned 700-800 acres. He gave each of his sons over 100 acres of land, also his daughters at the time of their marriage. Land was so cheap that you could easily swap a squirrel rifle for 200 acres.
