    158

1900 Gibson Co. Tenn. census in which John is married to Elizabeth states his father and mother were born in North Carolina.

In 1904, it appears that J.F. Jones and Steven Jones are transferring each other's 1/2 interest in inherited land to each other, so that result is that each owns a parcel land without sharing with his brother. Therefore, it appears that aboth Elizah and Nancy must have died before 1904.

As retold by Don Sandrock on June 30, 2008

Ernest was the one shot and killed after a robbery.
My mother always said Ernest had the highest I.Q. of all the Carpenters. Too bad his potential was never realized.
    As my mother told it:
Ernest held up a store and tried to get away. He ran into an alley and hid in a cardboard barrel. A spectator saw him climb into the barrel and directed the police to the location. .
The police then shot thru the barrel several times, without giving him the opportunity to surrender. Two of the bullets found their mark, one in the chest.
He fell out of the barrel and cried for help. The Policemen just stood there waiting for him to bleed to death.
They both lit up cigarettes, and only when finished smoking, they finally called an ambulance for help.
It was too late the loss of blood caused Ernest to slip into a coma. The hospital could do nothing further to save him. He lingered for several hours and died later that night.
I remember that night even though I was just short of four years old. We drove from fox Lake to Chicago, my mother was very upset, and we arrived after dark.
The rest of the family had already gathered in the house on Sheffield Ave.
There was much crying as I remember...
I wasn't fully aware of what was going on but I knew it was not good.
My mother became very angry when she found out how he was shot, and how the police behaved after the shooting.
She felt he could have survived if they had called the ambulance earlier.
She didn't have much good to say about police the rest of her life.

Mary William McDaniel Walker, 90, passed away on September 2, 2015. She was born in Good Luck, TN, where her father owned the Good Luck Grocery. She graduated from Rutherford High School and attended UT Martin and UT Knoxville; after college she moved to meet her husband and soul mate, GL Walker Jr. They married in 1945 and celebrated their 70th anniversary this year. She was a homemaker that loved home decorating and playing the piano. She was an avid bridge player and artist, but above all she loved her husband, family and friends. She was preceded by her sister, Rebecca Sue and her parents, WC “Brother” and Virginia McDaniel. She is survived by her husband, Grover L. Walker Jr., two sons, Grover L. Walker III (Susan), and Scott McDaniel Walker (Melinda), both of Memphis, four grandchildren, Lee, Kelly, Nicholas and Christopher, and four great-grandchildren. She was an active member of Kingsway Christian Church until her illness kept her from attending services. The family wishes to thank the church for visiting her frequently, communion and prayers brought to the home. The family will receive friends on Monday, September 7 from 5-7 p.m. with the funeral service on Tuesday, September 8 at 10 a.m. All services will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Silas enlisted into the Confederate Army on Oct. 21, 1861 with his brother John. They were in Company A of the Fifth Regiment. They both must have fought in the Battle of Ivy Mountain under Col. John S. Williams.

    Civil War in Kentucky

    American Civil War
    November 8-9, 1861
While recruiting in southeast Kentucky, Rebels under Colonel John S. Williams ran short of ammunition at Prestonsburg and fell back to Pikeville to replenish their supply.

Brigadier General William Nelson sent out a detachment from near Louisa under Colonel Joshua Sill while he started out from Prestonsburg with a larger force in an attempt to "turn or cut the Rebels off." Williams prepared for evacuation, hoping for time to reach Virginia, and sent out a cavalry force to meet Nelson about eight miles from Pikeville. The Rebel cavalry escaped, and Nelson continued on his way.

Williams then met Nelson at a point northeast of Pikeville between Ivy Mountain and Ivy Creek. Waiting by a narrow bend in the road, the Rebels surprised the Yankees by firing upon their constricted ranks. A fight ensued, but neither side gained the bulge. As the shooting ebbed, Williams's men felled trees across the road and burned bridges to slow Nelson's pursuing force.

Night approached and rain began which, along with the obstructions, convinced Nelson's men to go into camp.

In the meantime, Williams retreated into Virginia, stopping in Abingdon on the 9th. Sill's force arrived too late to be of use, but he did skirmish with the remnants of Williams's retreating force before he occupied Pikeville on the 9th.

This bedraggled Confederate force retreated back into Virginia for succor. The Union forces consolidated their power in eastern Kentucky mountains.

Result(s): Union victory (Indecisive, but Confederates withdrew.)

    Location: Floyd County

Campaign: Kentucky Confederate Offensive (1861) Next Battle in Campaign Previous Battle in Campaign

    Date(s): November 8-9, 1861

Principal Commanders: Brigadier General William Nelson and Colonel Joshua W. Sill [US]; Colonel John S. Williams [CS]

Forces Engaged: Combination of detachments from twelve Union Ohio and Kentucky units [US]; nine companies of infantry and two of mounted men (1,010 men) [CS]

Estimated Casualties: 293 total (US 30; CS 263)

The following paragraphs are quoted from a documented that seems to have been compiled by Wm. Lynn Nickell of Morgan County, "Selections from Morgan County". I met Lynn in the Morgan County Library on a visit there. This quote appears to have come from another text. I do not know the name of that book right now.

"John Lewis, father of Thomas Lewis, was born in Donegal Cunty, Ireland in 1678, the descendent of a family of Huguenots who took refuge in that kingdom from the persecutions that followed the assassination of Henry VI of France.

His rank was that of an Esquire and he inherited a handsome estate which he increased by industry to a considerable value.

In 1716 he married Margaret Lynn, the daughter of the Laird of Loch Lynn who was a descendant of the chief of a once powerful clan in the Scottish Highlands.

Owing to some trouble with his tenancy, he fled in 1729 to Portugal. After some strange adventures there, he emigrated in 1731 to America. He was joined by his family in America and established himself in the Valley of Virginia, two miles east of the present site of Staunton.

He built a house of native stone, a good defense against the Indians and in 1754 it successfully withstood a long Indian siege.

He was colonel in the Augusta County Militia as early as 1743; he was presiding justice in 1745 and high sheriff in 1748.

In 1751, when 73 years of age, he assisted his son Andrew, then agent of the Loyal Company, explore and survey the latter's grant on Greenbrier River. It was because he became entangled in a thicket along the banks of the stream that he gave it the name of Greenbrier.

For some years after Fort Lewis was established the Indians were jealous and finally became aroused. When fighting broke out Lewis was well stricken in years but his four sons were grown and well qualified to act the parts of leaders.

During this war, the Indians attacked Fort Lewis. John Lewis, though old and infirm, opened a porthole where he stationed himself and fired at the Indian attackers while is wife Margaret re-loaded the rifle. In this manner he sustained a siege of six hours, killing upwards of a score of Indians before he was relieved by the appearance of his party.

He died Feb. 1, 1762, at the age of 84. He was a member of the Episcopalean church.

Since the number of males under 10 is accounted for with Keeton, boys, I assume that James McGuire (son of Jane) is not living with them.

    1820 Census:
Kentucky, Bath County: Oweningville, John is listed 7 lines below his brother James Pieratt. The spelling is incorrect.

It shows the following people living in the home:
3 males under 10 years [Eli, Valentine, Thomas]; 1 male 26-45 [John]; and 1 female 16-26 years[wife Anna].

John is 11 lines away from Michael Carpenter.

    Name: Michael Carpenter
    Township: Owingsville
    County: Bath
    State: Kentucky

Source Citation: Year: 1820; Census Place: Owingsville, Bath, Kentucky; Roll: M33_16; Page: 190; Image: 101.

In the 1820 Kentucky census, it shows:

2 males (age 10-16), 2 males (age 18-26), 1 male (over 45 - probably Michael Sr.), 2 girls (age under 10), 2 girls (age 16-26), and one female over 45. The also appear to own 1 male slave (age 14-26), 1 female slave (age 14-26), and 2 female slaves (age 26-45).

[This would mean that 4 sons are still living at home, and that there are four daughters living with Michael now. I considered whether these could be daughters of his oldest sons living at home, but currently, I don't show any birth dates of his grandchildren that would be in the teens between 1810-1820, except for John, but he has moved out and shows up on his own in the 1820 census.]

Living a couple of houses from Michael in the 1820 census is Daniel Carpenter and family. I don't know if this is an older son or brother to Michael at this time.

There is also a Absalem Carpenter living in Bath County during the 1820 census. I believe this to be another son of Michael, but I have no proof just yet.
